Bernie's Picks

My Favorite Places to Eat & Drink

Six Munich classics — from Augustiner's three legendary houses to a craft newcomer, the iconic Chinese Tower, and Paulaner's Salvator stronghold on the Nockherberg.

People always ask me where to eat and drink in Munich. So here's my honest shortlist — six places I keep coming back to. The three Augustiner houses (Stammhaus, Keller, Bräustuben) for tradition, Giesinger Bräu Schänke for the craft scene, the Chinesischer Turm for that classic English Garden beer-garden feeling, and Paulaner am Nockherberg for Salvator and one of the best views in town.

Chinesischer Turm
01

The English Garden Icon

Chinesischer Turm

Beer Garden
Englischer Garten 3, 80538 München

Munich's second-largest beer garden, right in the heart of the English Garden. 7,000 seats around the wooden pagoda, a brass band playing oompah from the tower on weekends, and the gravel-and-chestnut atmosphere that defines a real Bavarian Biergarten. Bring your own snacks or grab a Hendl from the self-service stalls.

Bernie's must-try

  • Half a Hendl (roast chicken)
  • Steckerlfisch fresh off the grill
  • A Maß of Hofbräu Original

Best for: A sunny weekend afternoon with friends and a Maß in hand

Augustiner Keller
02

The Beer Garden Classic

Augustiner Keller

Beer Garden
Arnulfstraße 52, 80335 München

If I had to pick one beer garden in Munich, this would be it. 5,000 seats under century-old chestnut trees, gravel underfoot, and the unmistakable hum of locals after work. Bring your own food on the self-service side, or sit down for proper Bavarian fare.

Bernie's must-try

  • Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick)
  • Obatzda with a fresh pretzel
  • A Maß of Augustiner Edelstoff

Best for: Warm summer evenings under the chestnut trees

Paulaner am Nockherberg
03

The Salvator Stronghold

Paulaner am Nockherberg

Beer Garden
Hochstraße 77, 81541 München

Home of the legendary Salvator and the famous Starkbierfest each spring. The beer garden sits on the Nockherberg with one of the best views in Munich, and the restaurant inside is proper Bavarian without feeling touristy. This is where Münchners go when they want Paulaner the way it's meant to be served — at the source.

Bernie's must-try

  • A Maß of Salvator (during Starkbierzeit)
  • Schweinsbraten with dark beer gravy
  • Bavarian cream with berries

Best for: Starkbierzeit in March — or any sunny day on the terrace overlooking the city

Augustiner Stammhaus
04

The Historic Heart

Augustiner Stammhaus

Neuhauser Straße 27, 80331 München

The original Augustiner restaurant in the pedestrian zone, dating back to 1328. Vaulted ceilings, dark wood, and the kind of waiters who've worked there for thirty years. Pricier than the Bräustuben, but the atmosphere is worth every euro.

Bernie's must-try

  • Tafelspitz
  • Wiener Schnitzel with potato salad
  • Apfelstrudel with vanilla sauce

Best for: A long lunch on a rainy Saturday

Augustiner Bräustuben
05

The Local Wirtshaus

Augustiner Bräustuben

Landsberger Straße 19, 80339 München

Right inside the old brewery building — you can literally smell the brewing happening next door. It's loud, it's proper, and it feels like Munich the way it used to be. Tourists rarely make it here, which is exactly why I love it.

Bernie's must-try

  • Schweinshaxe (crispy pork knuckle)
  • Kasspatzn
  • Augustiner Helles straight from the source

Best for: Cold winter nights when you want something hearty

Giesinger Bräu — Schänke
06

The Craft Newcomer

Giesinger Bräu — Schänke

Martin-Luther-Straße 2, 81539 München

Munich's craft brewery scene at its best. The Schänke in Giesing has its own little stage, a proper terrace, and the unmistakable Giesinger beers brewed just around the corner. It's where I send friends who think Munich is only about the big six breweries — Giesinger proves there's a new generation worth drinking.

Bernie's must-try

  • Giesinger Erhellung
  • Whatever's on the seasonal tap
  • A snack from the small but solid menu

Best for: A Wednesday-to-Saturday evening with live music and a younger crowd
