My Story

About Me

Bernhard Slominski — but everyone calls me Bernie. Munich has been my home since 1998.

Bernie exploring Munich

My Origin

My roots are in Baden-Württemberg, not far from Stuttgart. I was born in Schwäbisch Hall, grew up in Eislingen, and later studied in Geislingen. Along the way, I gathered early professional experience at companies like Bosch and Mercedes, and I also spent half a year studying in Japan — a formative chapter that sparked my lifelong love for Asia. It's a background of solid Swabian engineering culture mixed with a curiosity for the wider world, and it still shapes how I see Munich today.

How I Got Here

I arrived in Munich in 1998 — fresh eyes, open mind, and absolutely no idea this city would become my forever home. What was supposed to be a chapter turned into the whole story. Over 25+ years later, I'm still here, still exploring, still falling for it.

My Professional Background

By day, I'm a Senior Lead Software Engineer at GBI-Genios Deutsche Wirtschaftsdatenbank in Munich, where I've been since 2016. With nearly 30 years of experience in software engineering, I've spent my career building, leading, and problem-solving in tech — work that taught me how to listen carefully, structure complex information, and explain it clearly. Those same skills turn out to be exactly what makes a good tour: curiosity, structure, and a story worth following.

How I Became a Tour Guide

It started in the English Garden. As a passionate jogger, I knew every path, every hidden corner, every quiet bench with a view — and I wanted to share those favorite spots with others. So I began offering tours through the park, just for the joy of showing people the Munich I loved running through. One day, someone from the Walkative team joined one of my tours. Afterwards, they came up to me and asked if I'd like to guide with them. I said yes — and that's how a jogger's passion turned into a profession.

My Hobbies

Travel is my biggest passion — especially Asia, which keeps drawing me back. That love for cultures and connection also led me to host the Japanese, Korean, and Chinese Stammtisch here in Munich, where I love bringing people together over good food and great conversation. When I'm at home, you'll find me jogging along the Isar or through the English Garden, or curled up with a book — usually something about history.

Let's Connect

I'd love to hear from you — whether it's about Munich, a collaboration, or just to say Servus!
